At first sight Mr.Colbert looks like the ‘ Woody Allen’ of political satire. Razor-sharp tongue and timing. Another in the great lineage of Jewish comedy?.
An interview established that he came from 11 siblings which prompted me to think he must have been raised in an orphanage. The silent ‘t’ in his surname suggested a French family down on a bayou of Louisiana.
However it turns out Stephen is actually the youngest child of an Irish-American family. These Irish Catholics were brave enough to venture south of the Mason-Dixon line. The Colberts were the ‘Waltons’ of the Carolinas and he admits he enjoyed a roaming idyllic childhood. No doubt losing his father and two elder brothers in a plane crash in 1974 brought a premature maturity.
Years on, after climbing to notable success on TV he found himself speaker at the US 2006 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner along with invited guest President Bush and his friends.
Colbert in this clip below shows courageous talent (first segment is worth a look, before it tails off into indulgent whimsy)
In essence he was showing the journalists at this media event how to do their job! Or what someone else has to do, because they’re not doing it! Look at the faces in the room! They don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Could they momentarily realise their impotence with their self importance
Mr Colbert could do a job on the”Fourth Estate” in ‘Oirland.
His stock has risen since then. It remains to be seen how the ‘faux political right-wing persona’ will develop; but for this effort he deserves some praise.
Did I say his stock has risen?
Not the Oval Office! The Sullivan Theatre and host of the Late Show. The pay is much better.
Did Woody beget Stephen?
